A New Addition to the Family

No, we're not having another kid. At least not yet. Mae promises to kill me if I even try to pull (or plug, *ahem*) a fast one. So, no. But our Indonesian maid has finally arrived. Last Friday, the Agency calls Mae. "Your maid is already here in Malaysia," the lady on the other end of the line said. "We'll send her over on Monday."

And for some strange reason, Mae and I were mortified. It was a mixed nuts of reactions. Intrigue. Worry. Enthusiasm. Relief. Fear. What if she turned out to be a lazy bone? What if she was one of those evil, employer-murdering, psychotics? What if Jesse never gets accustomed to her? What if she turned out to be one of those sexy, husband-grabbing seductress? That would be terrible. *ahem*. Terrible!

We were nervous wrecks by Saturday. As therapy, we decided to springclean our home to welcome our new addition. I know how weird this sounds; springcleaning a home to welcome someone who'd eventually do the springcleaning, but Mae and I have always been a little weird. :)

Anyway, Monday comes and so did Roma. And since I'm alive and blogging this, you can rest assured that she is pretty well-adjusted. Jesse had a little problem with her the first two days. He was very clingy unto Mae and I - despite the fact that we did our best to slowly get him accustomed to her. Mae thinks he may be jealous that there's someone new sharing his home now. Me, I'm just thinking of what to do with all that extra time now that I no longer have to wash bottles and clean house. Hehheh!

On the downside, Mae and I can no longer parade around the house in the buff.

  3. in america, only rich people have maids. the idea that you've been notified of the arrival of "your maid", the way somebody might be notified of their dry-cleaning or car-repairs is amusing to me... and a bit sad for the young woman.
"lazy bone"? that's the person that needs a maid. :)

  5. In America, it's because labor is expensive. Even Mexicans are smart and demand higher pay for anything. That's the reason why mostly upper class people have maids. Also, I think they view it as an economical waste to have a maid, they do however, hire cleaners. Like those you call to come clean the house and charge you by the room. Ick!
When I let my friends know that I had maids in Malaysia or have 2 Indian ladies come in twice a week to clean the house and do the laundry, or that I have a gardener take care of our lawn, my friends here freak out! LOL It's nice to be able to afford those things, my family isn't rich, just middle class and well off enough to spend a few more ringgit on these luxuries.

  6. hahah... springcleaning to welcome the maid? that's new! I guess you don't want to scare her on how much she has to do in the near future eh?

  7. I could really use a maid now. My place is messy, my wife's gone for a two-week course, and I'm damn lazy. Oh well, looks like two weks of cleaning ahead for me!

  8. It won't be for awhile, Andreas. Unless we have an "accident". *ahem*
Feh! I'm such a nice, decent guy that she'll never have anything to fear, Anjali!
You got me there, Chris. :) I am indeed the lazy bone. Anyway, here in Malaysia, a live-in maid is more affordable than day-care! For working parents like Mae and me, this is the best arrangement we can find.
Stop selling stuff on my blog, Gina!!! *piak*
Gwen, we were paying a cleaner to come in for RM 50 a session. Having Roma around still makes better economical sense. Too bad about the prices in US!
Actually, Momof2, we did it so that her first few days with us would not be terribly overwhelming. Also, we hope it gives her a clue to our expectation. :)
Aw man, Jordan. That's gonna suck. You wanna rent our maid?

You're right about that, Belacan. We're quite fortunate to have Roma.
Thanks Lucia. So far so good.

  14. I don't particularly like the term 'maid'. They should be called 'housekeepers/nanny'.
